The Gate Lodges of Ireland

The Follies Trust is holding an event at 6pm on Thursday, 4th April 2019, in the Irish Architectural Archive, 43 Merrion Square, Dublin.  The event marks the launch of the fourth and final volume of The Gate Lodges of Ireland series by J.A.K. Dean - The Gate Lodges of Connaught: a gazetteer.

The first volume of the series, The Gate Lodges of Ulster, was published in 1994 and was inspired by Dean's undergraduate thesis on Ireland's landed estates.  Dean's aim was to provide a complete inventory of gate lodges in Ireland.  The second volume, The Gate Lodges of Leinster, was published in 2016 and was followed by The Gate Lodges of Munster in 2018.

Dean will deliver a lecture in the Irish Architectural Archive where he will demonstrate that the gate lodge is a particular building type rather than a mere adjunct to the "big house".  The multitude of architectural styles will be discussed ranging from the fantastical Gothic to the humble vernacular.  Dean will give examples of gate lodges that have been lost but will also showcase those that have happily undergone successful restoration.

The event marks the launch of The Gate Lodges of Connaught: a gazetteer and Wordwell will have copies of all four volumes of the series on sale at a reduced rate.

Entry to the event costs €10 and includes refreshments as well as a complimentary copy of a Follies Trust publication.  Click here for more information.
