Appraisal

This post box is still in use and is a good example of the high quality design and production of mass produced cast-iron in the twentieth century. The use of Celtic Revival script records the promotion of national identity following the establishment of the Free State. This particular design probably dates to after 1937 as earlier post-Independence post boxes usually had the ‘S.E.’ cipher of Saorstat Eireann.
