Description

Freestanding cast-iron vent pipe, c.1900, comprising fluted pedestal with moulded necking having cylindrical shaft over, moulded stringcourse, and splayed saw tooth-profiled parapet. Set back from line of road on concrete footpath.

Appraisal

Supplied by the Leahy Foundry of Thurles in neighbouring County Tipperary a vent pipe remains of significance for the associations with the development of a sewage system in Callan in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. Although intended primarily as a functional piece raised elements together with a profiled parapet indicate the equal importance placed on aesthetic effects.
