Description

End-of-terrace two-bay two-storey rendered house and shop, built c. 1880, now derelict. Two-storey pitched roof return to rear. Pitched slate roof, clay ridge tiles, unpainted smooth-rendered corbelled chimneystacks, half-round cast-iron gutters on eaves corbel course. Painted smooth-rendered ruled-and-lined walling, straight V-jointed quoins to south, unpainted smooth-rendered gable-end and rear walls. Square-headed window openings, painted masonry sills, painted one-over-one timber sash windows. Painted timber shopfront, blank sign fascia with dentilled cornice terminating in profiled carved consoles with pedimented caps, fluted pilasters, plain-glazed display windows on stall risers returning to central recessed entrance with pole-moulded corner mullions, painted timber quadrants at heads, painted timber double doors with panelled bottom panels and segmental-headed glazed upper panels, plain-glazed overlight, painted carved timber cartouche over. Street fronted, similar building to north, gap site to south, rubble stone boundary wall to rear.

Appraisal

This, otherwise plain, property is enlivened by a very good timber shopfront with a fine carved cartouche over the entrance doors. Although modest in form this property and its neighbour represents one of the few historic structures remaining in the area.
