Description

Gateway, c.1895, comprising pair of limestone ashlar panelled piers (pecked panels to south-west elevations) with moulded cornices, globe finials, decorative wrought iron double gates, decorative wrought iron flanking pedestrian gates with limestone ashlar panelled outer piers, limestone ashlar curved flanking walls (one with inscribed lettering) with cut-stone coping, limestone ashlar panelled terminating piers, and sections of rusticated broken coursed squared rubble stone flanking boundary walls having squared rubble stone vertical coping. Road fronted on junction of two roads at entrance to grounds to De La Salle College.

Appraisal

An imposing, ornate gateway incorporating limestone ashlar piers attesting to high quality local stone masonry, together with early surviving wrought iron gates manufactured by McLoughlin of Dublin. Well maintained, the gateway is an attractive feature in the streetscape at the junction of Newtown Road and Park Road.
