Description

Gateway, extant 1902, on a symmetrical plan comprising pair of rendered panelled piers having pyramidal capping framing timber boarded double gates with rendered panelled outer piers having pyramidal capping framing timber boarded gates. Street fronted at entrance to grounds of Mount Carmel.

Appraisal

A gateway surviving as an interesting relic of the Mount Carmel complex following the demolition (1971) of 'the nunnery of the Sisters of the Carmelite order, which, with its nice school and beautiful chapel, finely situated on a handsome elevation above [New Ross] and the magnificent [River Barrow], is at once an imposing and interesting object' (Lacy 1863, 511).
