Enclosed cemetery containing three-stage circular-plan former watch tower, c.1820, now disused. Blocked door to north, slit windows with metal latticework frames above. Lower storey rendered rubble, with brick wall and crenellations above. Stands amid fragmentary wall footings of medieval church. Rubble stone enclosure wall includes caretaker’s cottage with blocked openings, hipped roof and high chimney stacks.
This watch-tower to guard against body snatchers forms part of the social and medical history of Dublin. It re-uses the old church stones and, from its hilltop site, dominates the old graveyard enclosure, which also preserves the façade of the contemporary cottage.
