This reservoir is the upper of two reservoirs serving the Rathmines public water supply and the Ballyboden water treatment works, c.1883. Turf covered stone dam, stone lined reservoir, stone valve building approached via steel lattice bridge, artificial waterways, cascaded spillway with footbridges over, water tunnels, lodges and other related engineered works.
Impressive collection of structures representing the age of great Victorian engineering schemes and still in use today. Designed by Richard Hassard in 1880. The fascinating design of the scheme enables this reservoir to collect clean hill water only, whilst bog-water passes by in an artificial watercourse, and cascades down to the lower reservoir.
