End-of-terrace two-bay two-storey house, c.1800, on a corner site retaining early fenestration to first floor. Extensively renovated, c.1985, with replacement timber shopfront inserted to ground floor. Gable-ended roof. Replacement fibre-cement slate, c.1985. Concrete ridge tiles. Rendered chimney stack. Rendered coping to gable. Cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves course. Rendered walls. Ruled and lined. Painted. Square-headed openings. Stone sills. Early 2/2 timber sash windows to first floor. Replacement aluminium casement windows, c.1985, to remainder. Replacement timber shopfront, c.1985, to ground floor with pilasters, fixed-pane display window (in tripartite arrangement with segmental-headed panes) and timber panelled doors having timber fascia over with consoles and moulded cornice. Road fronted on a corner site. Concrete flagged footpath to front.
This house, which dates to the earliest phase of construction on the planned Main Street, has been much renovated in the late twentieth century, leading to the loss of the original form to the ground floor and much of the original fabric. The arrangement of openings remains intact to the first floor, however, with early timber sash fenestration retained. The replacement timber shopfront to ground floor is an attractive addition to the composition, alluding to the traditional nineteenth-century form employed by successful merchants. The house is of particular importance for its age and contribution to the streetscape of Main Street, continuing the established streetline of the planned street, while contributing to the regular roofline of the terrace.
