Description

Gateway, c.1835, comprising pair of cut-limestone piers with moulded cornices, decorative ball finials, cast-iron double gates and cut-limestone flanking walls having square-headed pedestrian gateways (appearing as segmental-headed from north-west) with decorative cast-iron gates.

Appraisal

This gateway, which is an integral component of the Straffan House (Hotel) estate, is an attractive feature on the side of the road leading south-west out of the village of Straffan and serves to convey to the passer-by the opulence of the main house. The construction of the piers reveals a high quality of stone masonry practised in the locality while the gates are important examples of early surviving cast-iron work.
