Description

Gateway, c.1860, comprising pair of ashlar piers with moulded cornices, globe finials and decorative wrought iron double gates with rendered flanking boundary wall over rubble stone construction.

Appraisal

This gateway and boundary wall is one of the most prominent features in Rathmore and terminates the vista on the road leading out of the town to the south-east. The gateway is a fine and ornate design, providing a fitting entrance into the Rathmore House estate, and reveals the high quality of stone masonry practised in the locality, together with containing early surviving wrought iron gates of intricate design and considerable artistic importance.
