Description

Gateway, c.1900, comprising pair of red brick piers with cut-stone capping having cast-iron double gates.

Appraisal

This gateway, which forms the entrance on to the grounds of the Abbey Villa (House) estate, is an attractive, if subtle, feature on the streetscape of Turnpike Road. The gateway is evidence of the expansion and improvement of urban estates in the late nineteenth/early twentieth centuries, reflecting the growing prosperity of the merchant or professional class in Kildare town. The gates are a good example of early surviving cast-iron work and are of some artistic merit.
