Description

Gateway, extant 1872, on a symmetrical plan including segmental-headed opening between limestone ashlar piers on benchmark-inscribed cut-limestone plinths with limestone ashlar crow stepped voussoirs centred on cut-limestone keystone. Road fronted on a corner site at entrance to grounds of Newbridge Barracks.

Appraisal

A gateway surviving as an interesting relic of the Newbridge Barracks complex: meanwhile, a benchmark remains of additional interest for the connections with cartography and the preparation of maps by the Ordnance Survey (established 1824).
