Description

Gateway, c.1860, comprising pair of cast-iron piers with decorative cast-iron double gates having sections of decorative cast-iron flanking railings on rendered plinth wall having pair of cut-granite terminating piers with cut-stone capping.

Appraisal

This gateway is an attractive feature on the streetscape of Main Street. The gates and railings are fine example of early surviving decorative cast-iron work, while the terminating piers attest to the high quality of stone masonry practised in the locality and are composed of locally-sourced granite.
