Appraisal

Broadford School (former) is a fine and imposing substantial building that forms a dominant feature in the historic core of the village of Broadford, with a primary elevation composed of a symmetrical plan and of graceful proportions. The original use, and the prominent setting in the centre of the village, emphasise the social and historic significance of the school as one of the earliest surviving educational facilities in the locality. The use of separate entrances to each level (presumably one for female pupils, with one for male pupils) indicates the social and moral values of the period of construction that promoted the segregation of the sexes. The construction of the school in squared rubble stone attests to the high quality of stone masonry traditionally practised in the locality, and this is especially evident in the cut-stone dressings, including the fine doorcase and date stone, which have retained a crisp intricacy. The former school has been well maintained and, despite a subsequent change of use, retains many original salient features and materials, including the doorcase, fanlight, date stone, and a slate roof.
