Terraced three-bay three-storey over basement house with dormer attic, c.1775, on an L-shaped plan; single-bay (single-bay deep) three-storey return (west). Renovated, 2003, with replacement shopfront inserted to ground floor. One of a pair. Pitched slate roof with ridge tiles, red brick Running bond chimney stack (north) having concrete capping, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves with cast-iron downpipes. Rendered walls. Replacement shopfront to ground floor on a symmetrical plan. Square-headed window openings in shallow camber-headed recesses (upper floors) with cut-limestone sills, and concealed dressings framing two-over-two timber sash windows. Segmental-headed door opening (west) with tooled cut-limestone threshold, and dragged cut-limestone block-and-start doorcase centred on keystone framing timber panelled door having overlight. Street fronted with footpath to front.
A house erected as one of a pair of houses (including 12001015) representing an integral component of the built heritage of Kilkenny with the architectural value of the composition suggested by such attributes as the compact plan form; the diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor producing a graduated visual impression; and the high pitched roof. Having been well maintained, the form and massing survive intact together with quantities of the historic or sympathetically replicated fabric, thus upholding much of the character of a house making a pleasing visual statement in High Street.
