Freestanding cast-iron waterpump, c.1875, comprising fluted pedestal shaft on a moulded base with open work pail stand, moulded necking having spout, and fluted capping having acorn finial. Now disused. Set back from line of road.
An appealing, if unassuming item of street furniture representing an early instance of mass-produced cast-iron work. Fine inscribed or raised detailing identifies the artistic design quality of the piece: however, commissioned primarily as a functional artefact the waterpump remains of significance as a reminder of the mechanisms installed for the provision of water from a local source or well in the period before the development of mains systems.
