Freestanding cast-iron waterpump, c.1875, comprising banded cylindrical shaft with moulded necking supporting fluted cylindrical head having spout, curvilinear 'cow tail' handle having finial, and fluted domed capping having finial. Now disused. Set back from line of road on verge.
An appealing, if unassuming item of street furniture representing an early artefact of mass-produced cast-iron ware. Fine inscribed and raised details enhance the artistic design quality of the piece. However, designed primarily as a functional piece the waterpump is of significance as a reminder of the mechanisms installed for the provision of clean drinking water from a local source or well before the development of mains systems.
