Single-arch rubble limestone road bridge over river, dated 1884/6, probably incorporating fabric of earlier bridge, pre-1840, on site. Repaired, c.1950. Random rubble limestone walls with mass-concrete buttress piers, c.1950, and rubble limestone parapets having sections of replacement mass-concrete construction, c.1950. Single elliptical arch with cut-granite voussoirs having cut-granite date stone keystone, and rubble stone soffits having traces of render over. Sited spanning tributary of Dinin River with grass banks to river.
Although modified in the mid twentieth century an elegantly-appointed bridge spanning a tributary of the Dinin River in the centre of Coan (Coon) represents an important element of the late nineteenth-century civil engineering legacy of County Kilkenny. The juxtaposition of rubble stone, cut-granite and later mass-concrete in the construction produces a rustic quality assimilating pleasantly into the surround semi-rural landscape.
