Freestanding cast-iron waterpump, c.1875, comprising banded cylindrical shaft with moulded necking supporting fluted cylindrical head having spout, curvilinear 'cow tail' handle, and fluted ogee domed capping on moulded course having finial. Now disused. Set back from line of road on a corner site at crossroads.
Forming an attractive, if subtle feature in the streetscape a waterpump represents an important artefact in early mass-produced cast-iron. Although of primary significance as a reminder of the mechanisms installed for the provision of water from a local source the various raised elements identify the equal emphasis placed on aesthetic aspirations.
