Freestanding cast-iron waterpump, c.1900, comprising fluted pedestal on a moulded base having open work pail stand, moulded stringcourse supporting moulded necking having spout, and capping now missing. Now disused. Road fronted on verge.
Representing an early-surviving artefact of mass-produced cast-iron work a waterpump makes a positive, if subtle impression in the street scene. While fine detailing identifies the artistic design aspirations of the composition the waterpump remains of primary importance as a reminder of the services put in place for the provision of water from a local source before the development of mains systems.
