Detached three-bay two-storey national school, dated 1832. Derelict, 1973. Extensively renovated, post-2002, to accommodate residential use. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks, cut-limestone coping to gables, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Painted roughcast walls (possibly replacement, post-2002). Square-headed window openings possibly originally in bipartite arrangement with cut-limestone sills, and replacement timber casement windows, post-2002. Square-headed door opening with replacement glazed tongue-and-groove timber panelled door, post-2002. Set back from line of road in own grounds with hedge boundary to perimeter of site.
A well-composed modest-scale school of unassuming architectural aspirations with the design aesthetic dependant upon the balanced arrangement of pleasantly-proportioned openings for visual effect. Having fallen into disrepair by the end of the twentieth century extensive renovation works have restored much of the character of the composition, thereby making a pleasing impression in the landscape. The school remains of particular importance on account of the status as one of the earliest purpose-built educational facilities in Dunkitt and the environs.
