Freestanding cast-iron waterpump, c.1900, comprising banded cylindrical shaft with moulded necking supporting cylindrical head having spout, curvilinear 'cow tail' handle, and domed capping on moulded stringcourse. Set back from line of road on grass verge.
Representing an early-surviving artefact of mass-produced cast-iron work a waterpump makes a positive, if subtle impression in the street scene. While fine detailing identifies the artistic design aspirations of the composition the waterpump remains of primary importance as a reminder of the services put in place for the provision of water from a local source before the development of mains systems.
