Description

Single-arch cast-iron footbridge over railway line, built c. 1890. Flat arch above track, supported by four cast iron columns on either side of the track, approached by flights of sixteen iron flagged steps with a further six steps at a 90 degree angle, lattice work parapets with curved iron buttress brackets over track, decorative motifs including flowers and quatrefoils, cast-iron plaque.

Appraisal

An elegantly-appointed bridge, forming an appealing feature enhancing the group and setting values of the Portlaoise Railway Station complex, that was originally one of a pair of foot bridges. Although intended as a functional piece, the lattice work and decorative motifs enliven the external expression of the bridge and make it an aesthetically pleasing composition. There is The foundry plaque is obscured by paint, however there is a similar footbridge now at Tullamore Station, which was manufactured at the foundry of 'E Manisty Dundalk'.
