Attached limestone vehicular entrance, flanked by pedestrian gates, dated 1832. Round-headed voussoired limestone ashlar opening with impost mouldings and plinth course, flanked by pair of projecting piers all surrounded by plain stepped blocking cornice and parapet over. Replacement steel gates and chrome raised lettering to parapet block "GARDA". Squared limestone rubble walls to either side with flat-headed pedestrian gates with dressed ashlar surrounds with replacement doors.
A formal or ceremonial entrance to the former barracks, its solidity marking its primary defensive function. It belongs to an important building ensemble, which with its associated structures and grounds, forms a significant set-piece and greatly enriches the historic and architectural landscape of Portlaoise.
