Description

Freestanding cast-iron water pump, c. 1890, now disused. Cylindrical shaft with raised horizontal banding, fluted upper section with spout, hook for attaching bucket to spout, fluted domed cap with finial and 'cow-tail' handle. Set back from narrow village road on concrete base in small clearing surrounded by farmhouses and outbuildings.

Appraisal

This late-nineteenth-century water pump is a fine surviving example of the type and the design, with alternating plain and fluted sections and attractive domed cap, is of some artistic note. The structure is of technical interest for its cast-iron construction and pump mechanism, and, as what was once an important village amenity, is also of social interest.
