Description

Freestanding lime kiln, built c. 1820, no longer in use. Square-plan. Uncoursed random rubble masonry. Round-arched opening to south elevation with machine-made red brick archivolt. Set into hillside, site now overgrown, overlooking sea to south and surrounded by farmland.

Appraisal

Occupying a landmark position on a hillside overlooking the sea, this rubble masonry lime kiln is a fine surviving example of the type and acts as a reminder of the importance such structures once held within rural communities. Skilled masonry construction is of technical interest and the kiln is an eye-catching feature within the landscape.
