Description

Detached five-bay two-storey former school, built 1840, now a community hall. Rectangular block, open bed pedimented breakfront to south, extension to north. Pitched slate roof, crested ridge tiles, red brick chimneystacks, uPVC gutters. Random coursed limestone walling, red brick quoins, rendered c. 1930. Render removed. Smooth rendered walling to north and extension, limestone plaques to south elevation "TALLANSTOWN NATIONAL SCHOOL AD 1840" "FEMALE SCHOOL", "MALE SCHOOL". Square-headed window openings, red brick block-and-start surrounds, tooled limestone sills, painted timber casement windows. Square-headed door openings, red brick block-and-start surrounds, tooled limestone jambs, painted vertically-sheeted timber doors. Corner-sited with soft landscaping to environs, boundary by tooled ashlar plinth surmounted by cast-iron railings, bounded from church yard by rendered walling.

Appraisal

This former school has retained its original shape and form. Corner-sited, it stands at the heart of Tallanstown and forms an attractive complex with the Roman Catholic church to its west.
