Description

Detached five-bay two-storey house, built c. 1850. Rectangular-plan, shallow porch to south, two-storey extension to north. Pitched slate roof, hipped roof to extension, red brick corbelled chimneystacks, clay pots, tooled stone verge coping, moulded cast-iron gutters on eaves course, square downpipes; single-pitched roof to porch, projecting eaves with painted sheeted soffit supported on painted metal brackets, painted timber carved eaves boards. Painted roughcast-rendered walling, smooth rendered walling to porch, smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walling to extension. Square-headed window openings, painted smooth rendered soffits and reveals, painted stone sills, painted timber two-over-two sliding sash windows, replacement to ground floor south elevation. Segmental-headed door; painted timber Doric panelled pilasters, foliate console brackets and cornice; painted timber panelled door; plain glazed fanlight. Set in own grounds; garden to south, concrete path from door to gate to west, bounded from road by wrought-iron railings on painted smooth rendered plinth, wrought-iron gate to cast-iron piers; courtyard to north, single- and two-storey rendered outbuildings, hipped and pitched slate roofs, segmental-headed carriage arch to east outbuilding, square-headed openings to north outbuilding, painted timber vertically-sheeted doors; wrought-iron gates to courtyard.

Appraisal

This is an attractive example of a farm house of the mid-nineteenth century of some elegance. The fine doorway with its canopy and the well-crafted wrought-iron railings add to its architectural and artistic significance.
