Freestanding beacons, built c. 1820. Cylindrical-profile, random rubble limestone walling, conical caps. Located at estuary of Boyne River and marking shipping channels at approach to Drogheda harbour.
These beacons represent a fascinating reminder of Drogheda's development as one of Ireland's major harbours and trading centres. Prior to the dredging of the estuary, access to the port was unpredictable but with the construction of these beacons two distinct shipping lanes were established and sandbanks clearly distinguished. Their distinctive forms continue to add to the character of Drogheda.
