Description

Detached gable-fronted single-storey forge, built 1871, now disused. Limestone walls with rock-faced quoins and voussoirs. Pitched slate roof. Horseshoe-shaped opening with battened timber door. Paired cast-iron windows with central timber mullion and stone sill.

Appraisal

The horseshoe-shaped entrance was a feature commonly used in the nineteenth century to denote a building's use as a blacksmith's forge. It gives this modest industrial structure a certain architectural distinctiveness. The survival of some original external features and materials adds to the significance of the building. The date '1871' inscribed on a carved plaque above the entrance.
