Description

Convent graveyard, erected c.1900, comprising collection of cast-iron crosses (of common design) set in a rectilinear enclosure to the east of the Convent of Mercy. Graveyard bounded by cast-iron railings. Set well back from the road in convent grounds and accessed by lane running west-east from the main convent building.

Appraisal

This simple yet poignant burial ground is of historical and social significance to the community and landscape of Kilbeggan. It is a vivid memorial to the women of the Convent of Mercy who established the convent and associated schools in Kilbeggan during the late nineteenth-century. The gravemarkers themselves are attractive pieces of cast-iron and the composition is enhanced by the simple cast-iron railings surrounding the site.
