Description

Attached single-bay (two-bay deep) two-storey commercial warehouse, extant 1882, on a square plan with shopfront to ground floor. Flat roof not visible behind parapet. Rendered, ruled and lined wall to front (east) elevation with "Cavetto"-detailed cornice on rosette-detailed frieze on monolithic stringcourse below parapet; cement rendered surface finish (remainder). Remodelled rendered shopfront to ground floor centred on replacement fixed-pane display window. Urn-filled round-headed niches centred on square-headed window opening (first floor) with ogee-detailed sill, and moulded rendered lugged surround framing replacement timber casement window. Quay fronted with concrete footpath to front.

Appraisal

A commercial warehouse representing an integral component of the nineteenth-century built heritage of Wexford with the architectural value of the composition suggested by such attributes as the compact square plan form; the diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor producing a graduated tiered visual effect with those openings showing Classically-detailed "stucco" dressings (cf. 15503014); and the parapeted roof. NOTE: A photograph by Robert French (1841-1917) illustrates the shopfront emblazoned "FREDERIC WOOD SEED MERCHANT" (NLI L_ROY_04432) while a later photograph (November 1904) by A.H. Poole (----) of Waterford illustrates the premises rebranded as "St. IBERIUS CATHOLIC CLUB" (NLI POOLEWP 0469).
