Description
Terraced two-bay three-storey house, c.1900, possibly incorporating fabric of earlier house, pre-1840, on site. One of a pair. Pitched (shared) slate roof with clay ridge tiles, rendered (shared) chimney stacks having stepped capping supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves having iron ties. Rendered, ruled and lined walls. Square-headed window openings with cut-stone sills having iron sill guard to ground floor, rendered keystone to ground floor, and one-over-one timber sash windows. Elliptical-headed door opening with step supporting padstones, rendered archivolt having keystones, and timber panelled door having overlight. Interior with timber panelled shutters to window openings. Street fronted with concrete brick cobbled footpath to front.
Appraisal
A pleasantly composed house of modest size built as one of an identical pair (second in pair not included in survey) representing an element of the late nineteenth- or early twentieth-century urban domestic architectural heritage of Enniscorthy. Attributes identifying an individual, if understated architectural design programme include the slender vertical emphasis of the massing, the slight diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor, the subtle rendered accents, and so on. Having been well maintained, the house presents an early aspect with most of the original fabric surviving in place, both to the exterior and to the interior, thereby upholding some of the character or integrity of the collective ensemble in Weafer Street.
