Freestanding cast-iron mechanical waterpump, between 1903-24, comprising "Torus"-banded cylindrical shaft supporting fluted head having spout, and domed piston capping with curvilinear bracket supporting curvilinear "cow tail" handle having finial. Now disused. Road fronted on unkempt verge [OS].
A waterpump representing an interesting example of mass-produced cast-iron work making a pleasing, if largely inconspicuous contribution to the aesthetic appeal of a rural street scene. However, while Classical refinements, including the characteristic "cow tail" handle, pinpoint the artistic potential of the composition, the waterpump remains of equal, if not primary significance as a reminder of the mechanisms installed for the provision of water from a communal source or well in the period prior to the development of mains systems.
