Description

Gateway, extant 1840, on a symmetrical plan comprising pair of granite ashlar piers on moulded cushion courses on plinths having stringcourses below "Cyma Recta"- or "Cyma Reversa"-detailed shallow pyramidal capping supporting wrought iron double gates with granite ashlar outer piers on moulded cushion courses on plinths having stringcourses below "Cyma Recta"- or "Cyma Reversa"-detailed shallow pyramidal capping supporting wrought iron gates. Road fronted at entrance to grounds of Coolcliffe House.

Appraisal

A gateway surviving as an interesting relic of the Coolcliffe House estate following the decline of the eponymous country house (see 15704036). NOTE: Reclaimed cut-granite panels carry the date of construction of the country house ("1727") and a date of unknown significance ("1784") to John Cox (d. 1793).
