Freestanding monument, dated 1904, on a square plan with Sicilian marble statue on cut-Ballyknockan granite pedestal on cut-Ballyknockan granite stepped base. Street fronted.
A monument signed (1904) by George Smyth (1858/9-1927) of Dublin commemorating 'THE HEROISM AND SACRIFICES OF MICHAEL DWYER AND HIS FAITHFUL CONSORT SAM MacALLISTER AND ALSO TO PERPETUATE THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE INSURRECTIONARY MOVEMENTS OF 1798 1803 1848 AND 1867'. NOTE: It was originally intended that a statue of Michael Dwyer (1772-1825) would be the focal point of the monument but the committee ultimately commissioned a statue of his 'faithful consort', Sam MacAllister (d. 1799), who, during an ambush (15th February 1799) on a party of fugitives taking shelter in a thatched cottage in Derrynamuck (see 16402801), stood in the doorway to draw the soldiers' fire on him and allow his comrades, including Dwyer, to make their escape: MacAllister, his battle wounds clearly evident, is nevertheless depicted in a defiant stance with a rifle in his left hand.
