Description

Detached three-bay two-storey constabulary barrack, built c.1850. The building is finished with roughcast render. The front door has a plain fanlight and is set within a semi-circular arch headed opening which has raised and painted surrounds. The door sits within a small projecting single-storey porch with a plain broken bed pediment. Window openings are flat-headed with raised painted surrounds and eight over eight timber sash frames. The hipped roof is finished with natural slate and has cast-iron rainwater goods. Chimneystacks are granite and have slightly corbelled caps and clay pots. The building faces the road and is slightly set back behind plain cast-iron railings.

Appraisal

This is a well preserved mid nineteenth-century constabulary barrack whose detailing enriches the surroundings and whose overall appearance adds rhythm and character to the streetscape.
