Description

Triple-arch road bridge over the Shanowennadrimina Stream, built c. 1800. Coursed limestone rubble walls with limestone copings. Elliptical arches with limestone rubble voussoirs. Stile and steps to south leading from road to embankment. Painted cast-iron plaque to south parapet road.

Appraisal

This road bridge is a testament to the quality and endurance of local engineering and craftsmanship. Old School Bridge is one of four bridges over this stream in Castlelyons, all thought to have been partially funded by the Barrymores of Castlelyons Castle, who patronized much of the architecture of the town.
