Description

Freestanding cast-iron footbridge, erected c. 1890, over millrace at Castletownroche Mills. Cast-iron surface approached by flights of five cast-iron steps at each end. Cast-iron parapets with lattice sides and curvilinear support brackets, with round-plan piers with ball finials.

Appraisal

This unusual footbridge with its latticed railings and curved supports, creates an impression of lightness which forms a pleasing contrast to both its mundane purpose and the industrially produced materials used in its construction. The bridge forms part of a local amenity area and as such also incorporates a social function.
