Description

Limestone entrance gates to Presentation Convent and pedestrian gate to church grounds, erected c. 1860. Comprises vehicular entrance flanked by pedestrian entrances. Square-profile ashlar piers to vehicular entrance with caps, string courses, plinths, rebates for gates, and double-leaf decorative metal gates with cross finial and having wrought-iron arch with name spanning pier caps. Pedestrian entrances having castellated parapets, square-headed door openings with block-and-start surrounds and limestone thresholds. Decorative metal gate to south entrance. Bronze plaque detail to south pier.

Appraisal

This fine Gothic Revival entrance to the church and convent is one of a pair, situated at either side of the graveyard. The entrance exhibits fine craftsmanship and is representative of the imaginative novelty and detailing of the mid-nineteenth century.
