Appraisal

This tall and substantial retaining wall is an interesting and notable feature in Fermoy's townscape. Its survival and intact condition are testaments to the craft involved in its construction. It was built during the Great Famine as a relief scheme to provide employment. It forms a group with two other famine relief schemes in the town which involved lowering the gradient of three steep hills.
