Freestanding cast-iron water pump, c. 1870, with banded cylindrical shaft, fluted domed cap with pointed finial, banded spout with plain bucket grip and curved cow's tail pumping handle.
Water pump displays artistic detail in a functional design, with elegantly curved handle and fluted cap and banded spout. Illustrates the high standards of industrial design in cast-iron, prevalent in nineteenth century. Pumps played both an important functional and social role in nineteenth and twentieth centuries, providing a communal water source in absence of mains supply.
