Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, installed c.1890, comprising of moulded pedestal supporting fluted shaft. Banded neck with spout and recent brass tap surmounted by fluted cap with acorn finial. Mounted on rendered plinth block.
An attractive road side feature which is still in working order, an increasingly rare occurrence. The hydrant is a fine example of the excellent mass produced cast-iron items which were made in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, incorporates simple artistic details. The hydrant was an important element in the development of water supplies within an urban context and remains a communal water source.
