Freestanding tooled limestone war department stone, installed c.1810. Roughly dressed plinth, carved lettering with Ordnance Survey benchmark and chamfered top with carved triangular rubble stone capping, set into enclosing wall of former cavalry barracks.
An interesting reminder of the military presence in the town in the nineteenth century. This former war department stone is one of the few surviving elements of the cavalry barracks, along with the wall against which it is placed.
