Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge, built c.1820, now ruinous. Rubble stone chimneystack. Rubble stone walls having sections of roughcast render. Render plaque and round-headed recess to side (south) elevation, having dressed stone impost blocks, keystones and sill and red brick voussoirs. Blocked round-headed window and door openings to front (west) elevation with dressed stone impost stone and keystones, having red brick voussoirs. Square-headed window opening to gable of side (north) elevation. Remains of rubble stone enclosing wall incorporating round-headed recess to eastern gate pier of former entrance way. Dressed stone impost stones and sill to recess, having red brick voussoirs. Located to roadside south of associated castle.
This entrance and lodge are now disused, and instead a northerly approach to the castle is used. Although derelict, this eyecatching group is a noteworthy roadside feature, and serves as a reminder of the extent and grandeur of the demesne in the past. Together with the related outbuildings, it adds to the castle's setting and context.
