Single-span railway bridge, built c.1845, carrying Great Southern & Western Railway line to Cork over Whitechurch Road. Rock-faced ashlar limestone piers with dressed limestone coping supporting cast-iron deck. Squared and snecked dressed limestone abutments. Recent metal railing to parapet.
The high quality stone masonry evident in the piers of this railway bridge demonstrates the skill of the craftsmen involved in its construction. Operated by the Great Southern & Western Railway Company, the railway line from Dublin to Cork opened in 1848. Its continued use incorporating the original bridges demonstrates the high quality of engineering and construction.
