Description

Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge, built c.1810. Hipped artificial slate roof with projecting eaves, centrally placed rendered chimneystack and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves board. Rendered and painted walls having moulded render pilasters to corners and fascia to eaves. Square-headed window openings with render sills and timber casement windows. Square-headed door opening flanked by render pilasters and having moulded render surround to replacement timber panelled door. Rendered square-profile gate piers having limestone ball finials and name of house inscribed to limestone capping stones and double leaf cast-iron gates. Cast-iron railings to rendered flanking walls having rendered terminating piers with limestone capping stones.

Appraisal

The gate lodge for Lotaville is of a design typical for this era and forms a landmark on the roadside indicating the entrance to Lotaville. The decorative railings and gates provide added interest and, like the cut limestone details of the piers, display a high level of craftsmanship.
