Freestanding tapering square-profile red brick chimneystack, dated 1865, with stepped cornice. Abutting boiler house and engine room to west. Square-profile base having alternating red sandstone and limestone courses with red brick to shaft having cut limestone quoins, platbands and round-headed blank openings. Carved limestone date plaque to south elevation bearing inscription 'CHARLES J. CANTILLON ESQ. MAYOR 1865'. Round-headed flue opening to north elevation with polychromatic stone voussoirs, now blocked. Located within former water works complex.
This chimney is an integral part of the former Cork Corporation Waterworks. With its handsome brick and limestone construction, it is a fine example of Victorian industrial design. The plaque to the south elevation associates the chimney with a former mayor of Cork, Charles J. Cantillon. It is a distinctive feature in the complex, while its height has allowed it to become a key landmark in the surrounding area. It is an important part of the city’s civil engineering heritage.
