Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, c.1880, having moulded base, fluted shaft, moulded neck with spout and recent tap, and domed fluted cap.
Water pumps and hydrants are an iconic feature of Victorian streetscapes, the 1878 Public Health Act having introduced such items to rural villages and towns. They are amongst the earliest remaining features of sanitation and services facilities in these places and help to contextualise the contemporary architecture. The water hydrant forms an integral part of the streetscape of Cullen and exhibits attractive, well-executed detailing which enlivens the form of this utilitarian object.
